Portraits

My colour portraits are mostly mixed media and currently the main ingredient in the mixture is coloured ink. To that I often add gesso and then whatever is to hand - acrylic paint, coloured pencil and chalk. I have recently got back to oil painting - so some oil portraits will appear soon. The sitters are family and friends and faces from my memory.

Black and White

This gallery has pencil drawings and white chalk, charcoal and black ink wash drawings. Drawing with pencil is a wonderful way of studying a face and finding all the lovely details - a tiny dimple where a smile starts or the shape at the corner of a mouth before someone talks or frowns. The things that make a face familiar. The charcoal and ink drawings here are more results of exploring faces looking at the way that light plays the kind of moods each interaction creates. These drawings are produced quite quickly sometimes in as little as half an hour - whereas I work on a pencil drawing for days.
